Go Fly A Kite |
It was Makar Sankranti Day (January 14th), one of India's biggest traditional festivals, the day when many Indians celebrate by kite-flying events and competitions. I had returned home from work to find my younger son couched comfortably in front of the TV Set, channel surfing, avoiding advertisements between his favorite Nickledeon and Cartoon Network channels. "Go Fly a Kite", I admonished him. "Do not waste your time watching TV". Having managed to snatch the all-important remote control from him, I switched to CNBC to find Mr. Kiran Karnik, President of NASSCOM, India's Association of Software Companies. During an interview, he was speaking about a Mckinsey study which has estimated the Net Outsourcing savings of US 16.8 Billion $ to the US Economy. He seemed reasonable. I could not catch his exact words but he said something to the effect that " However, to tell that to somebody who has lost a job will naturally lead to emotions being raised." |
Point Taken. One person who was naturally emotional was a doctor friend based in New Jersey, USA currently on annual vacation leave to India. Her husband works as a Wall Street Financial Specialist for one of the large Silicon Valley IT Hardware Companies whose share price currently languishes around the single digit dollar mark. " Things do not look very good right now in the US. My husband always finds somebody at a customer place who has quoted for a project for a few dollars less. We cannot really also return to India, my elder daughter goes to college next year. You know, the college educational system in the US is better than India." The US today boasts of probably the world's best educational system. However, it is restricted to a few pockets of excellence just like in India, even though the overall standards would be higher. Educational Excellence must be broadbased and pervasive at all levels. Since it is really the WMD (Work Money Distributor) of the Knowledge Economy, investments in the same are of a strategic nature. |
Interestingly, in the January 12th 2004 issue of Fortune Magazine , the late Mr. Peter Drucker management guru made a couple of important points about Outsourcing and the US educational system. On outsourcing, his viewpoint was that every job which does not lead to senior management must be outsourced. Also, he spoke of the US Work Organization as the most important Educational Institution for an employee. The Key Question to ask is How Can Corporations be retooled to become lifetime ' Schools in Business ' ? Rather than relying only on the traditional MBA churning 'Business Schools'. Also, what about the role of the family in education ? I go a perceptive mail from this website in my Inbox today which read " The conduct of the parents is an education to the children." Perhaps, I should accompanied my son and flown a kite with him !
