Challenges faced by Marketing Communication Professionals today. (30th January 2009) Some Thoughts based On Interactions with an Extremely Creative Lady Freelance Advertising / Design Specialist. 1.0 - All marketing communication professionals face 3 key problems today. 1.1 - Slow Down - In the short term, because of the recession, Marketing & Advertising Budgets are going southwards and will continue to do so for the next 18 - 24 months. So we have to give our customers more bang for the buck. Are we prepared to work longer smarter hours to provide better solutions to our customers ? |
Can we as professionals spend time to understand this new medium ? Create viable cost effective creative solutions for our customers ? Are we ready to upgrade our technical & creative skills for these new online media ? 1.3 - Single-Point Solutions - Can one offer end to end marketing communication services to our clients ? Not just copy or artwork preparation or concept visualization but solving all or a major portion of their marketing communication problems via a single point approach ? This will save our customers co-ordination costs & hassles. 2.0 - Why Me ? - What makes our products / services offerings globally unique in this era of globalization & downturn when everybody is looking to cut costs ? Why should somebody choose me instead of my competitor who could offer a cheaper / better / faster offering ? Many times the competitors will be 'Unknown Unknowns'. How do we deal with such invisible competitors ? Are we prepared mentally and technologically to work with our competitors in a collaborative mode ? So that our customers get the benefit of this co-opetition ( Competition + Co-operation) Approach ? |
3.0 - 3 Key Business Goals - In this downturn, how will our service offerings help our clients to reach the 3 business goals of Cutting Costs Satisfying Stakeholders Raising Revenues ? 4.0 - Organization - If one has to create an organizational model (ie team up with other like-minded individuals who have complementary skills), are we prepared for the sacrifices that team work necessarily entails ? With these individuals, can we visualize a shared future, shared values, a common vision and a common end-goal which is fair to all stakeholders (customers, employees & others ) ? Are we ready to sacrifice our own personal egos & stakeposts for a larger common organizational interest ? 5.0 - Innovation - How can one innovate in this difficult period ? Can one look at a partnership with our customers rather than as a vendor to them ? Are we ready to suitably re-adjust our mindsets for a partnership business model (wherein which we get compensated only if our customer's goals are reached, rather than the traditional model of getting paid for our hours / resources spent on the tasks ?) |
