13th May 2004. Regular Rains Than Technology. It was an Elite Gathering ......
It was an Elite Gathering on a hot and humid evening on May 6th at
Nariman Point, Mumbai's Business District in the South of the City.
Mumbai Police's Top Brass had assembled along with Select IT CEO's and Luminaries from Academia and IT Industry Body Associations. The interaction was to generate Information Technology ideas and suggestions for the Mumbai Police's Computerization Efforts to assist the Common Man. Eminent speakers outlined their ideas on how they could help the Mumbai police use technology effectively. The Police Commissioner and His Deputies listened patiently making notes. Meanwhile, a light drizzle had steadily started, giving some much needed relief to all of us, suffering from the heat. Just as the last speaker was finishing his talk before the Eminent Chief Guest - The Police Commissioner's turn to speak, the rainfall shower became much more heavy and intense. The Master of Ceremonies was in two minds as to whether to continue the meeting. After all, the Chief Guest - The Police Commissioner had not yet spoken. The shower eventually became unstoppable. South Mumbai had finally got it's first unseasonal May Monsoon Shower. As we were waiting to go down, I remarked to my colleague "Perhaps God realizes that maybe India needs Rains more than Technology " . Last week's remark haunted me two nights ago. As the results of the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly Election were announced. It's IT-Savvy Chief Minister - Mr. Chandrababu Naidu's party had been wiped out in the State Polls. Many political pundits and analysts were blaming Mr. Naidu's over- emphasis on the IT Industry at the expense of neglecting the drought situation in the rural countryside. This is NOT a political column. But in the priority list of India's development ladder, do we perhaps need Regular Rains more than Technology ? Any Thoughts ? Mahesh Khatri.
