1st May 2004. Saturday Slumber Surely Shell-Shocked ! Lazily, getting out of beds on this Saturday morning and glancing at today's newspapers surely shocked most of us in the IT Industry in India. ... ... The news was of SHELL awarding India's largest IT Outsourcing Contract. The Shell-Shock ? The Size of the Single Deal. Over US 1 Billion Dollars. This single-deal size is larger than the annual turnovers of India's top 3 IT companies - Infosys, WIPRO and TCS. I think, this is one sure-sign that Outsourcing to India really has become mainstream. Also, the fact that the company outsourcing the jobs was a Respected European (Anglo-Dutch) Company. Not a US company, as has been the trend. Offshoring spreading to Europe too. Is it a co-incidence that the deal was announced in India today ? 1st May 2004. Which happens to be Labor Day internationally. IT Labor surely has got internationalized in the 21st Century. When Jobs are transferrable across Boundaries. To me, another interesting aspect of the above deal was that the contract was outsourced to IBM and WIPRO. Both Collaborators and Competitors in India's Hardware Space. Perhaps, also in the Global IT Services Space ? Maybe, continuing the era of Co-optetion. Co-operation Between Competitors ? A sign of Maturity for the IT Industry. Perhaps, similar to the Microsoft-SUN Settlement a couple of weeks ago. A Good Sign for our Customers who need us ( IT Industry Players) to work together. So that they can Catch One Neck Surely. (This is A Shameless Plug !) Talking of Necks, this Saturday also slid in some soothing news for the Indian subsidiaries of Foreign Companies who have set up BPO (Business Process Outsourcing Units) in India. Their Indian Income necks were on the line after some confusion on their Income Tax position. A Senior Official of India's CBDT (Central Board for Direct Taxes) (similar to the US Government's IRS (Internal Revenue Service) has clarified the Tax Position for Indian Subsidiary Companies of Foreign Multinationals here. The Summary of their Viewpoint is that India's Tax Policies will be in line with internationally accepted principles of International Law ! Way to Go !!! Mahesh Khatri.
